Craniotomy for excision of brain tumours

Craniotomy is a surgery to cut open a part of the skull. This section of the skull, called a bone flap, is removed to access the brain and its pathology underneath. Depending upon the location and the size of the pathology which needs to be addressed, the craniotomy if appropriately placed, viz temporal craniotomy, pterional, suboccipital and others.

A part of the hair is shave before the surgery. An incision is made on the skin to reflect it so that the required part of the skull bone is exposed. The Skull bone is cut in appropriate size with the help of high speed drills called craniotome. Once the skull bone is removed, the dura (protective covering of the brain) is cut and reflected. Now the brain surface is exposed. The tumour is the identified and removed with using an operating microscope and microsurgical instruments. After removed of the tumour, the dura is stitched. The skull bone is kept back in placed and fixed. The skin incision is stitched.
