Brain Surgeries
Brain surgeries are surgical procedures performed on the brain to correct any abnormalities like bleeding, tumours, fluid collection or aneurysms. They are highly specialised surgeries performed by highly trained neurosurgeons. They require many advanced equipment like microscope, high speed drills, endoscope, ultrasonic aspirators and others. With advances in technology, the precision of the surgeries have increased and the surgical risks involved have tremendously reduced.
Performing a brain surgeries usually involves creating a hole in the skull (burrhole) or removing a piece of the skull (craniotomy) to access the pathology in the brain. There are different types of craniotomies depending on the location of the pathology. Commonly performed surgeries are listed below.
Ventriculo – peritoneal shunt
Hydrocephalus is a condition where there is excess collection of water in the brain which is leading to a set of problems which are explained under the name raised intra cranial pressure, viz – headache, vomiting and drowziness. The fluid in the brain is normally produced daily and reabsorbed.
Burrhole and Subdural hematoma evacuation
Chronic subdural haematoma is a condition where blood collects between the skull and the surface of the brain. It’s usually caused by a minor fall or head injury.
Decompressive craniectomy
A decompressive craniectomy is a neurosurgical procedure in which a section of the skull is removed. When the swelling of the brain (known as cerebral edema)
Surgery for depressed fracture
Typically a depressed skull fracture needs surgical management. Elevation and fixation of the fracture is recommended. The skin flap is elevated and the fracture fragments are identified.
Craniotomy for excision of brain tumours
Craniotomy is a surgery to cut open a part of the skull. This section of the skull, called a bone flap, is removed to access the brain and its pathology underneath.
Surgery for vestibular schwannoma
The aim of this surgery is to remove as much of the tumour as possible while preserving facial nerve functions (movements of the face). In some cases,
Microvascular decompression
This surgery is performed in patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasms or glossopharyngeal neuralgia
Aneurysm clipping
A cerebral aneurysm is a weak spot on a blood vessel in the brain that balloons out and fills with blood. If this ruptures then life threatening consequences may happen.
Endoscopic transnasal surgery
Endoscopic transnasal surgery is performed through the nose to remove tumours from the pituitary gland and skull base. This is a kind of minimally invasive surgery,
