Burrhole and Subdural hematoma evacuation
Chronic subdural haematoma is a condition where blood collects between the skull and the surface of the brain. It’s usually caused by a minor fall or head injury. The patient can have headache, confusion, weakness of limbs or may become drowsy/unconscious.
Burr hole surgery is the main treatment for subdural haematomas. Burr hole surgery is often carried out under general anaesthetic, but is sometimes done under local anaesthesia(awake surgery) if the patient is co-operative. One or more small holes are drilled in the skull and a flexible drain is inserted to drain the residual hematoma and left in place for a couple of days. The patient is typically discharged in few days.
