Project Description

ENDOVASCULAR NEUROSURGERY

Endovascular neurosurgery is a subspecialty within neurosurgery which used catheters to navigate through blood vessels to diagnose and treat various conditions and diseases of the blood vessels of the brain. Most endovascular procedures require only a small incision in the skin over the leg to access a major blood vessel and insert the catheters. Endovascular neurosurgery a form of minimally invasive surgery which is less painful and allowing for shorter recovery time than traditional surgery.

Commonly performed procedures/Surgeries

Thrombolytic therapy: Medicine is injected to dissolve a clot in a blood vessel in the brain or elsewhere in the body.

Endovascular coiling: A very thin coil is inserted within a brain aneurysm to block blood flow.

Cerebral angiography.
This is a procedure to check for the entire anatomy and pathology of the blood vessels in the brain.

Carotid artery stenting.
A small balloon and/or a stent is deplyed to open a narrowed carotid artery.

FUNCTIONAL AND EPILEPSY NEUROSURGERY

Functional Neurosurgery treats patients with treatment resistant neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, movement disorders, chronic pain and spasticity.

Epilepsy
Resective surgeries, such as lobectomies and seizure focus resection
Disconnection surgeries, such ascorpus callosotomy
Vagal nerve stimulator (VNS) implants
Responsive neurostimulator (RNS) implants

Movement disorders
Patients with movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and dystonia are generally treated by Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) after medical management has failed.

Chronic pain
This can be reduced by performing procedures like spinal cord stimulation chordotomies etc

Spasticity
Implantable baclofen pump can be placed for patients with severe spasticity.

Microvascular decompression
This is a surgical procedure done for patient suffering from trigeminal neuralgia
