Atlantoaxial stabilisation

Atlantoaxial stabilisation

Atlanto axial dislocation is loss of stability between the atlas and axis (first and second cervical vertebrae), resulting in loss of normal articulation. There can be many causes of such dislocation

  • Accidental injury – Road accidents / sports injury
  • Genetic disorders of the connective tissues
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Unstable atlanto axial dislocation need surgery – Atlanto axial stabilisation. This procedure involves creating a bone bridge and immobilisation between the first and second cervical vertebrae. The bone bridge can be achieved by placing artificial bone or patients own bone in the joint between the two bones which help in fusion. Screws are placed through both the bones which serve as strong anchors to the spine. These anchors are then attached to metal rods forming a metallic bridge.
