Lumbar Spondylolisthesis
Lumbar spondylolisthesis is a condition where there is forward or backward slippage of one lumbar vertebra on an adjacent vertebra.
Causes
Trauma, degenerative, birth defects, infection
Symptoms
- Back pain is predominant, especially while bending or changing he position
- Sciatica
- Numbness/ Weakness in the lower limbs
- Neurogenic Claudication – increase in symptoms when the patient walk for a considerable distance
Diagnosis
- X rays – flexion and extension views
- CT and MRI of the lumbar spine
Treatment
- Conservative treatment – Pain medications, muscle relaxants, physical therapy, bracing (LS Belt). Life style changes – avoiding sports activities and strenuous work is strongly advocated.
- Surgery – Spinal stabilisation with pedicle screws where the adjacent vertebrae are fused, whereby there will be no further slippage of the bones. Surgery can be open or minimally invasive surgery.
